What makes Munich special

Why is there a black footprint by the cathedral door?
A legend says the builder bet the devil that no window could be seen inside. From one spot the devil saw none, so he stamped and left his print. One step on, windows appeared. In a rage, he turned into a wind, but could not blow the church down. Source: Der Münchner Dom, checked .
Why do little barrel makers dance on the town hall?
They are the Schäffler, figures in the Glockenspiel, a bell show in the town hall tower. The tale goes that after a bad plague, people were scared. The barrel makers dared to go out, and danced in the streets to cheer them up. Real dancers still do it at times. Source: muenchen.de, checked .
Why do people dance in the English Garden at dawn?
It is the Kocherlball. Long ago, cooks, nannies and servants met by the Chinese Tower on summer Sunday mornings. They had to get back to the homes where they worked, so they danced very early. The ball was banned for years, then brought back. It still starts at dawn. Source: muenchen.de, checked .
Why is there a monk on the city's coat of arms?
The city's German name, München, means home of monks. So its sign shows a monk in a black robe holding a red book. Over time the monk was drawn younger, with curly hair, and became the Münchner Kindl, or Munich Child. Today young women play the part in person. Source: Wikipedia, checked .
Who is the angel who forgot his message?
He is Aloisius, from a funny tale. A Munich porter dies and goes to heaven, but he gets grumpy with no beer or snuff. God sends him back with advice for the Bavarian government. He stops for a beer, forgets his task and is still sitting there. Source: muenchen.de, checked .
Why do beer gardens have chestnut trees?
Long ago, brewers kept beer in cellars dug into the banks of the Isar river. To keep them cool, they put gravel on top and grew chestnut trees there. The trees give thick shade, and their roots do not go deep. Soon people drank beer at tables under the trees. Source: Wikipedia, checked .
